If you just want to do a quick walk up Mam Tor, there is a carpark half way up the hill with a short sharp path leading to the summit (see below). There are a few options in this scenario. In both directions the views are fantastic but I walked clockwise to get the steep bit done at the start as I personally find it’s easier on my legs that way. You can walk the trail either clockwise or anticlockwise. Here is the route I followed using the AllTrails app which I highly recommend if you want to track you hiking! The route takes in the highlights of the area with extraordinary views across the National Park and even out to Manchester and other settlements in the distance when the weather’s fair. The walk is a 17km ridge hike that follows a well marked and signposted trail from Edale to Mam Tor then loops round to Kinder Scout before dropping down into Edale again. Mam Tor and Kinder Scout are in the centre of the Peak District National Park close to the town of Edale. The National Park is in Derbyshire, close to the cities of Manchester and Sheffield in the north of England. For a more challenging walk you can park on street on Old Mam Tor Road and walk up, following the Broken Road (as we did when we walked from Mam Tor to Lose Hill).Mam Tor and Kinder Scout are two summits situated in the heart of the Peak District, near the Hope Valley.

There is a National Trust car park at Mam Nick. Please park responsibly – parking on grass verges churns them up and is a silly way to avoid a £4 parking fee! The postcode for the Mam Tor car park is S33 8WA but this covers a large area so look out for the National Trust car park signs.

This is only a small car park so can get busy on weekends and during school holidays. The easiest place to park is in the Mam Nick car park, run by the National Trust. Also, please don’t hog the trig point and be considerate of other people trying to take photos there. Be sure to get there around 30 minutes before sun up time, and don’t be surprised when it’s busy. My top tips are to choose a day with some cloud cover and when it has been a clear night the day before. You can see down The Great Ridge and it looks magical. Mam Tor is a popular place to watch the sunrise, and it’s no wonder! The sun lights up the whole of the Hope Valley and the colours in the sky can be amazing. This is a great walk for kids to do, and you can either go back down the steps to the car park if you wanted a quick walk or extend it and walk from Mam Tor along The Great Ridge towards Lose Hill and down into Castleton for a longer walk out.
